I don't think it is a unique business that will give you first-mover advantage.

There are probably a number of lash or nail businesses out there so how sufficiently differentiated is yours? ???

Lastly, kudos to you for thinking of ways to hit your couple goals to save up for your flat but what is your boyfren doing to also work towards that same goal? ???

I just graduated from polytechnic, and decided to take a gap year to take up internships to figure out what I want for a career, before I go to uni next year.

On top of my internship, I have been considering opening a home-based salon doing nails (part-time) for about a year now because I have great passion for doing nails. After looking into the courses, fixed assets and variable expenses I have to invest in for a nail business vs for lash extensions, I'm thinking twice about the nail home based salon.

Here's a summary of the pros and cons of doing nails vs lash extensions that I created:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1IqX_p9j6ckNTXQogGHabBHFvsauPGpWjiKtgFfPAtqE/edit?usp=sharing

Here’s a little more background on why I have such a dilemma:
  • I have a short term goal of going on a $5k cruise with my boyfriend by Aug 2019. I’m afraid that the ongoing investment (to expand my colour offering) the nail business will most likely require may affect this vacation plan.
  • My long term goal with this business is to earn as much while I’m in uni to save up for a house with my boyfriend, so the low profit per hour with the nails kind of concerns me.

So to conclude, my dilemma that I need opinions on is: Should I go into the nail business because it's my passion, knowing it'll bleed my finances out, or should I just go into doing lashes first so that I can hit my short term goals, and then think about doing the nails business when I've saved enough?

Thanks for taking the time to read everything!!

Didn't manage to see the google docs at all due to my phone. But I think you can go into it without bleeding finances. Basically you nd to get the certs and import the nail materials over only right? And I think home office scheme is available, so needa get approval from hdb (no nd to rent retail space). Nail materials can be very cheap when u import from the source instead of going thru middlemen.
If you can do well in something u dislike u can basically do much better in something u are passionate for and willing to fight it out. Nowadays nail art is really in high demand especially so for those who know how to do intricate designs and cutesy stuffs on nails. Some light marketing + word of mouth will do. Nowadays simple gelish nail art can cost $100 plus. I think if u needa worry Will be when u go into it and ppl get pushy and demanding during the process. The margin per hour should be quite high ba gelish nail art with art on each finger can take around two hours plus and home saloon who provide those can charge between lowest I heard is $45 highest I heard $200plus. Depending on how much they do marketing plus their nail tech skills. Given the nail art materials costs being quite cheap, the revenue is quite close to your profit. And marketing can be cheap too (exhausting on Labour time instead of money) u can provide free full set services to influencers and get them to share codes to their followers for discount. Think your bf should worry you hv less time to spend with him den u have this dilemma to pick up services or to spend time with him.

To think we were scolded last time while playing video games. This guy Tyler Blevins earns $500k per month streaming Fortnite.

And Razer's CEO was an a solicitor before he started on his project to design the world's first gaming mouse. Now he has net worth of 1+ bil. And I can totally imagine what his ex colleagues were thinking when he first embarked on the proj. (He's a law sch grad)

TS is not doing this full-time. Her goal is to make money on the side while doing her internship before going to university.  So this venture is never going full-time.

This side business is savings for the matrimonial home.

Actually i am unclear on her primary goal - be an entrepreneur,  small business owner?  Go to university?  Save for marriage and house?

can. studying is just 1 aspect of being a student...
all students know this... there are tons of free time hahahaha.
thats why got so many ecas and time spend on games, clubbing etc.

instead of gaming, clubbing, focus on a niche and keep doing it.

the easier way is blogging or start selling small stuff on carousell
