My MIL is kind but she like to nag at her son.

MIL who don't stay with the couple will less likely to have conflict with the ones who stay with the couple

Heng my parents smart enough to say they won't stay with my new family if I ever marry. Conflict free.

If it's my own mother, when I am unhappy, I can tell her. When it's MIL, it's really tricky. Hard to know if she will be offended.

Its common nowadays, cos in the past they didn't  have time to accompany their own kids so when they have grandchildren they try to make up for the lost by being obsessed with grandchildren. Whatever things dil do, they will feel that it's not up to their expectations.
