[AMA] I Have Been in New Zealand For A Year
« on: January 24, 2016, 04:12:36 pm »
I am a Singaporean who has decided to pack up my bags and leave for NZ to carve out a road for myself. I arrived in NZ on 7 Jan 2015. It has been a very tough year, but I experienced and learnt many things. NZ is 5 hours faster in SG during spring and summer, and 4 hours during autumn and winter.

I will try to answer as many questions as I can (be civil though) and as fast as I can, but do note the time difference though and that I do not camp in front of the computer 24/7.

NZ people have very low standard on food, and they pretty much eat the same thing over and over again.
fish&chips, burgers, pizzas are the standard fare. there are a lot of chinese food shops over here which they buy from too, like fried rice and fried noodles. vegetables usually just salad. they eat a lot of potatoes too.
if they cook at home, sometimes they just dump everything into the oven, be it vegetables or meat.

Do maoris prefer to settle in north island due to warmer weather?

rather than the maori, it is more of a decision by the general population. there are 3 big cities in nz. auckland (the financial center), wellington (the capital) and christchurch (south island biggest city). the north island contains about 75% of the nz population i think, with auckland itself having 50% approx of the whole nz population.

christchurch has been devastated by the 2010 earthquake and have not completed rebuilding. settling in the north is more of an opportunity issue, although admittedly the north has warmer weather.

not yet haha.

Why are there no snakes in new zealand?

i dont know if there are no snakes here. but nz originally had no mammals. all mammals were later brought in some time in the past.

If captain cook hadn't signed the treaty of watangi, do you think you'd be speaking french instead of english?

I think what TS meant is that he/she won't be there since it's not an English-spoken country?

Try to ask something more relevant since TS is making the effort for a AMA thread.  :)
