[AMA] I am a full time private tutor
« on: January 24, 2016, 01:45:49 pm »
Good afternoon! I've been a full time tutor since 2014 after doing it on a part time basis during uni days for about 3 -4 years. I mainly teach English, Maths and Humanities with students from both primary and secondary school. Please keep the questions civil:)

Have a great Sunday people!

Do you teach mainly 1-1 or group tuition?

Most of my students are 1-1 lessons, with the exception of one assignment where I teach 3 of them(school mates) at the same time as a group

Here's how a typical day is for me, give or take 15-30 minutes depending on situations arising.

0800: Getting up and going to the gym
0900: Shower and breakfast
1000: First lesson of the day with international students(central)
1200: End of first lesson
1230: Lunch time and also the most boring part of the day as I have to kill 2-3 hours(usually I bring my notebook out to finish marking and lesson plans)
1430: Second lesson, most of the kids end class by 2pm and this time slot is particularly challenging as students are tired and not motivated to study after the whole day in school
1630: End of second lesson, off for a coffee break
1730: Final lesson of the day, this slot is great for primary school and lower secondary school students as they have sufficient rest but for upper secondary school students, this time slot would eat into their online gaming/hanging out with friends/football and basketball, causing them to be a little edgy at times
1930: End of lessons and I would usually meet my friends or head home right after this

The general benefit of tutoring is that my timings are rather flexible and I am able to settle my errands or pursue other interests during the day time. However, human interaction is sacrificied as unlike my peers who have colleagues to talk to in the office, I am usually alone. I meet my friends for lunch/dinner every week but there will always be a lack of human interaction haha.

Yeah. I understand too. I'm also self-employed, working my own hours. All my friends are working their own jobs too.

I graduated last year, have been doing this on a full time basis since. I started out by teaching my cousins and met a friend in my first year of uni who introduced me to an agency. Since then, I've been working with the agency where my agent finds students for me!

Exactly, the hours of self-employment are oddly brutal and causing headaches with meeting up with friends who have regular working hours. How do you manage with this?

Through an agency, my agent finds the students for me. They are a mix of local and foreign students in government and international schools.
