Scam Alert - Gumtree / carousell / online advert
« on: August 11, 2016, 02:23:15 pm »
It always started with a message to the seller (your goods should be those expensive type, $1000 or more), asking for LINE ID or whatsapp to continue discussion.
Someone with a foreign number will text you (most of the time it would be USA, but not necessary the criminal is an American)

He/she will start bargaining with you for your item. It does NOT matter, its just a plot to think he/she is serious. I have met these type of scammers more than a few times, and its the same, even if you refuse to give discount, he/she will accept it in the end.

Then he/she will say its a gift for wife / hubby / daughter / son / whoever in Malaysia /or some country nearby and ask you for ship to there instead.
He insists he will pay you first via bank transfer, but you need to be at the post office / fedex office to ship it out, and he will transfer BEFORE you shipped. Sounds good right?

If you do a few google searches, here is how the scam will work. If the payment is via PayPal (or some other ways) the money will get debited from his account, and it looks like you will receive the payment.
However, once the goods are sent out, he will file a request to cancel the payment and PayPal will return because PayPal usually side with the money source (since usually scammers are the one taking the money and victims are the one sending money)

The money will NOT appear in your paypal account in the end.
But your expensive goods are sent out.

Take note and share this to your friends!
Loving life here!
