yes. there are different insurance for different purposes.
for example, you mentioned Medishield life. that is medical insurance, designed to cover your hospitalisation costs.
However it is reimbursement that pays the bills of hospital, thats all.

You would need medical insurance that pays you lump sum for critical illness, that lump sum would help a lot in covering loss of wages, family expenses and etc.

And life insurance is mostly for retirement planning and to cover the loss of your wages to YOUR family should you passed away prematurely. It has nothing much to do with medical.
If you are hit with a big illness and is hospitalised, Life insurance does not help you. In fact, you still must pay premium for it.

The reverse is true. Holding medishield with life does nothing for your family should you suddenly pass away from illness/accident/whatever reasons. Your family has no medical bill but nothing else to cope with loss of an income-earner in the family.
